| Doing therapy with clients is a great privilege. As clients relate their stories and problems during a session, the interaction is respectful and without judgement, and confidentiality and trust is emphasised. The therapeutic context provides a safe place to reflect on one's existence, unlike with a friend, relative, or colleague where speaking freely might upset the listener due to the personal involvement. Each individual creates a reality for him/herself in which some things become possible and other things are inconceivable. One of the most important tasks of a psychologist is to help clients examine their reality, and guide them in attaining a wider perspective that presents new options, opportunities, and solutions. The client's individual needs guide the psychologist in selecting a number of therapeutic techniques to increase the client's overall level of coping, contentment and well-being. In the therapy, emphasis is placed on holistically examining the client's existence, and emotional, behavioural, physical, cognitive, spiritual, contextual, and cultural aspects are considered as they become relevant. |
